The Pokemon GO app has been praised for getting users outside, walking and exploring communities. However, possible eye health risks could be associated with lots of time spent staring at a mobile device — beyond accidentally walking into things!

While more research is needed to determine if prolonged digital device use causes permanent damage to the eyes, many eye doctors are concerned about the effects of blue (HEV) light emitted from digital devices. Animal studies have shown that exposure to high levels of HEV light can damage tissue in the retina, possibly leading to conditions like macular degeneration.
In addition to potential damage from blue light, Pokemon GO players could experience digital eye strain while playing for long periods of time. Reports say that individuals are using the app for an average of more than 43 minutes a day.
Players should follow the "20-20-20" rule: take a break every 20 minutes and look at something 20 feet away for at least 20 seconds. This exercise helps relieve digital eye strain, which can cause dry or irritated eyes, blurred vision and more. — N.B
